지금 넷플릭스에서는 한국 드라마 ‘수리남’이 인기이다. 영어 제목은 ‘Narcos Saints’이다. 영어 이름에서 알 수 있다시피, 마약에 대한 유통과 거래에 대한 이야기이다.

수리남은 지금 남미에 있는 작은 국가이다. 드라마 제목으로 드물게 한 국가의 이름을 채택하여, 많은 이들이 수리남에 대한 궁금증을 자아냈다.

사실 나도 ‘베트남’의 옆 나라쯤인가 할 정도로 이 나라에 대하여 무지하였다. 후에, 이 드라마를 보면서 비로소 수리남의 위치가 남미 대륙 어디쯤이구나 알 정도였다.

Suriname is now a small country in South America. Rarely, the name of a country was adopted as the title of the drama, prompting many people to wonder about Suriname.

In fact, I was so ignorant of this country that I thought it was a country next to 'Vietnam'. Later, while watching this drama, I finally knew where Suriname was located in South America.

실제로 주인공은 부모님이 일찍 돌아가시고 밑으로 두 남매를 건사하기 위해서 막노동이나 가라오케에서 술 심부름을 하는 등 온갖 고생을 다한다. 생활의 안정을 위해 결혼이라는 방법을 택하여, 자신과 결혼해주겠다는 여자를 만나 가정을 꾸리고 자식들도 낳는다.

그의 삶이 녹록치 않아서 결국 돈을 벌기 위해 수리남 행을 택한다.

For the stability of life, he chooses the method of marriage, meets a woman who wants to marry him, starts a family, and has children.

His life is not easy, so he eventually chooses to travel to Surinam to make money.

맨 처음 '수리남'을 보았을 때에는 한 베이비부머의 삶을 담아낸 드라마인 줄 알았다. 가난한 가정 환경, 조실부모, 돌파구 없는 삶, 피곤한 하루하루 등등의 묘사에서 이 이야기가 어디로 흘러갈지 뻔하지 않은가 생각했었다.

그러기에는 젊은 시절에 대한 서사가 과장되어 있고, 약간은 만화처럼 엉뚱한 면이 있었지만, 이 이야기는 마약을 다루는 이야기라는 점에서는 충분한 전제조건이 되었다.

When I first started watching the drama "Suriname," I thought it was a drama that captured the life of a baby boomer. I thought it was obvious where this story would flow in the descriptions of poor family conditions, the death of parents, a life without breakthroughs, and tired days.

To do that, the narrative of youth was exaggerated, and there was a bit of a comic side, but this story was a sufficient prerequisite in that it was a drug-handling story.

이 드라마를 보면서 살면서 내가 경험했던 1968년생들을 떠올려보았다. 내가 만난 그들은 나와 한 시대를 같이 산다는 점에서 나의 삶의 궤적과 크게 차이가 없으므로, 뭐 그렇게 어렵게 살았겠어 싶었다. 말이 베이비부머지 그들의 부모도 한국전쟁 때는 어린 아이들이어서 전쟁의 어려움을 크게 느꼈을까하는 의구심이 들었다.

하지만 삶은 결코 하나의 단면으로만 가지고 판단해서는 안되기 때문에, 주인공이 수리남으로 가는 여정을 이해하기로 한다.

While watching this drama, I remembered the people who were born in 1968 that I experienced. They I met were not much different from the trajectory of my life in that they lived with me for a time, so I wondered if they had lived such a difficult life. I wondered if their parents felt the difficulties of the war because they were young children during the Korean War.

However, since life should never be judged by only one aspect, I will understand the journey of the main character to Suriname.
