올해 28살이 되는 조성진은 아직 서른이 안되었음에도 곡을 해석하는 능력이 탁월하다. 그는 인생을 어떻게 해석할까. 왜 그의 연주는 마음 깊은 곳의 희로애락을 다 건드리는 것일까.

조성진은 2015년에 쇼팽 콩쿠르에서 우승을 하고 한국에서는 물론 전세계적으로 더욱 유명해졌다. 내성적이고 수줍게 웃는데, 연주를 할 때는 그 진지함과 고통이 고스란히 느껴져서 무척 야누스같다는 생각을 했다.
Cho Seong-Jin won the Chopin Competition in 2015 and became more famous not only in Korea but also around the world. He is usually introverted and smiles shyly when he smiles, but when he plays, his seriousness and pain are felt in me, so I thought he was very Janus-like.
베토벤의 피아노 협주곡 ‘황제’는 그 음악의 아름다움으로 인해 음악의 황제와 같다고 하여 붙여진 이름이다. 특히 2악장은 내가 무척 사랑하는 부분인데, 조성진의 연주는 미치도록 서정적이다. 베토벤은 살아생전에 인생의 기쁨과 아픔을 다 견디며 간 사람인데, 이 젊고 수줍은 청년이 이것을 그 나름대로 정말 섬세하게 표현하고 있다.
Beethoven's piano concerto "Emperor" is named because it is said to be like a music emperor due to its beauty. In particular, the second movement is a part that I love very much, and Cho Seong-Jin's performance is insanely lyrical. Beethoven is a person who endured all the joys and pains of life during his lifetime, and this young and shy man expresses this in his own way in a really delicate way.
사람은 일생을 다 견디고 살다가 마지막에 철이 그제서야 들었다고 깨달으면서 죽는다고 생각한다. 항상 깨달음은 나중에 오고 우리가 사는 그 순간순간들은 어떤 해석을 하기도 전에 멀리 저만치로 가버린다.
I think people endure all their lives and die only when they realize that they have matured at the last time. Realization always comes later and the moments we live in go far away before any interpretation.
