칠석(Chilseok-Seventh Evening)

Chilseok is a day celebrated on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month.

Every year, on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, Gyeonwoo and Jiknyeo can meet only once a year through the Milky Way bridge made of magpies and crows.

Some people refer to this day as the "Oriental Valentine’s Day." Meeting a loved one just once a year, and the tears that follow on the journey back, forming a river of tears in the Milky Way—perhaps it could indeed be called a Valentine’s Day.

The story goes like this.

Long ago, in the heavens, there was a beautiful fairy named Jiknyeo. With her beautiful appearance and diligent weaving, she was the apple of the king's eye.

One day, Jiknyeo met a handsome young man named Gyeonwoo and fell in love at first sight. The more they met, the more they felt like they were destined for each other, and their love deepened.

Jiknyeo became so absorbed in Gyeonwoo that she eventually neglected her weaving duties. This earned the king's wrath.

As a result, the king ordered that Jiknyeo and Gyeonwoo could meet only once a year, on the 7th day of the 7th month.

Jiknyeo, who lived in the heavens, needed a bridge to meet Gyeonwoo, who lived in another part of the sky. The bridge was made by countless magpies and crows, who joined their bodies together to create a path for Gyeonwoo and Jiknyeo to meet. Thanks to them, Gyeonwoo and Jiknyeo were able to reunite.

This is why there is a saying that magpies and crows have bald heads.

How wonderful it would be if the longing for a loved one could be conveyed, even if only once a year.

And how wonderful it would be if that one day could turn into a week, a month, a year, ten years, and then eternity.

This year, Chilseok falls on August 10, 2024.

칠석은 음력으로 7월 7일을 기념하는 날입니다.

해마다 음력 7월 7일이면, 견우와 직녀가 은하수로 된 오작교를 통해 일 년에 단 한 번 만날 수 있습니다.

어떤 이는 이 칠석날을 동양의 발렌타인 데이라고 합니다. 일 년에 단 한 번, 사랑하는 이를 만나고 그 돌아가는 길은 그 아쉬움으로 온통 눈물바다로 은하수를 만들었으니, 발렌타인 데이라고 할 수도 있겠지요.

얘기는 이렇습니다.

예전에, 하늘 나라에서 아름다운 선녀인 직녀가 있었지요. 아름다운 모습과 항상 베를 성실하게 짜는 모습으로 하늘 나라 왕의 사랑을 독차지 하였습니다.

어느 날, 직녀는 견우라는 아주 멋진 청년을 만나 첫눈에 반해버립니다. 둘은 만나면 만날 수록 서로가 천생연분인 것처럼 느껴져 더욱 사랑이 깊어 갑니다.

직녀는 견우에게 너무 몰입한 나머지 결국 자신의 일인 베짜기를 소홀히 하게 되었는데요. 이 때문에 하늘 나라 왕의 노여움을 사게 됩니다.

결국 왕은 직녀와 견우를 일 년의 단 한 번, 7월 7일에 만나도록 명령하였습니다.

하늘 나라에 살던 직녀는 다른 하늘에서 살던 견우를 만나기 위해서는 서로를 연결해주어야 할 다리가 필요했습니다. 이 다리 역할을 한 것이 바로 수많은 까마귀들과 까치들입니다. 까마귀들과 까치들이 서로의 몸을 붙여서 견우와 직녀가 만나도록 다리를 만들어주었습니다. 견우와 직녀는 이들을 밟고 서로를 만날 수가 있었습니다.

이 때문에 까마귀와 까치는 머리가 까졌다는 이야기도 있습니다.

연인을 그리워하는 안타까운 마음이 일 년에 단 한번이라도 서로에게 전해질 수만 있다면 얼마나 좋을까요.

그 하루가 일주일이 되고, 한 달이 되고, 일 년, 십 년, 그리고 영원으로 이어진다면 얼마나 좋을까요.

올해 2024년 칠석은 바로 8월 10일입니다.

사랑 그 이상의 것은 없습니다.
