Goodwill and Punishment (善懲惡勸)

It literally means offering good and punishing evil.

In recent TV shows and movies, the line between good and evil is often ambiguous.

At first, we support good characters, and at some point, we support and understand the behavior of evil characters.

Also, even good characters are often dealt with in a very cruel and harsh way when punishing evil people.

Perhaps taking revenge away from the boundaries of the law stimulates another illusion in people.

It's because there are so many cases where it can't be helped in reality.

In that sense, ‘Taxi Driver’ follows the motto of "권선징악."

Good people get together and do good things. And it punishes the villains of society very harshly.

Nowadays, Korean TV shows follow this behavior a lot.

Sometimes it's too cruel to watch until the end.

Kim Do-ki, the main character of ‘Taxi driver’, punishes Korean villains. Cruel, but really cathartic.

These days, we use the word villain more than 악당.

It's 빌런. That's a villain.

권선징악(勸善懲惡)

말 그대로 선을 권하고 악을 벌한다는 뜻입니다.

요사이 티비쇼나 영화에서는 선과 악의 경계가 모호한 경우가 많습니다.

처음에는 착한 등장인물들을 응원하다가 어느 순간에는 악한 인물들의 행동을 응원하고 이해하게 되는 경험을 많이 하지요.

또한 선한 등장인물들조차 악한 사람을 벌할 때에 아주 잔인하고 가혹한 방식으로 처리할 때가 많지요.

어쩌면 법의 테두리에서 벗어나서 복수를 하는 것이 사람들의 또 하나의 환상을 자극하는 것 같습니다.

현실에서는 어쩔 수 없는 경우가 너무나 많기 때문입니다.

그런 의미에서 모범택시는 ‘권선징악’의 모토를 그대로 따릅니다.

선한 사람들이 모여서 좋은 일을 합니다. 그리고 사회의 악당들을 아주 가혹하게 벌을 줍니다.

요새 한국의 티비쇼는 이러한 행태를 많이 따릅니다.

때로는 너무 잔인하여 끝까지 볼 수가 없을 때도 있지요.

모범택시의 주인공 김도기는 한국의 빌런들을 벌합니다. 잔인하지만, 정말 속시원하게 말이죠.

요즘 ‘악당’이라는 말보다 ‘빌런’이라는 말을 많이 씁니다.

빌런, 즉 villain인데요.
